Newspaper from 1956
The heater duct cleaners found this newspaper somewhere in our heater. It's a local paper from Sept. 20, 1956.
The paper is The ADVANCE-STAR, Burlingame, California.
Tech: the typesetting has some screwy justifications, like "r a n g e d, refrigs., disposals,". Eleanor Davis is the first woman employee to complete 15 years of service at an electronic tube manufacturing firm. Employee is actually spelled "employe" regularly. Phone numbers are written like "DI 4-6033".
Comics: The cars look different. The 3 single-frame comics are especially hard to understand. In one, a woman on a couch leans in to stare at a man: "Oh, boy, am I glad I got these glasses! I once thought I was in LOVE with you!" That's not still funny, right? Was there something new about glasses?
Dates: In one of the comics, a big sister uses 1989 in the punchline, apparently as a very far off year. The publish date happens to be the birthday of Gary Cole (Bill Lumbergh in Office Space). Also born this week and the next: Mikey Rourke, David Copperfield, Jamie Hyneman (MythBusters), and Linda Hamilton (Terminator).
Prices: Newspaper subscription is $1.25/month or $15.00/year. A (used) dining room table sells for $10, chairs are $3 each. A burglar steals $206 from medical offices. Daly City parking meters bring in $18,500 a year. San Mateo firemen are being hired at $396 to $455 a month.
One want ad is in section "5-situations wanted":
REL. Christian white lady wishes hswk., $1.50 hr. according to work, or P/T kitchen helper, inspector lge. facty. wk. JU 7-6664 Tues., Wed., Fri., Sun. and eves.
In the Coast Guard story, 2 of the 3 people are mentioned with their full street addresses for no clear reason.
Thanks, guys from Advanced Cleaning Services!
